TreatmentThe evidence in support of a physically active lifestyle and good nutrition as major players in ALL aspects of health and fitness is now overwhelming. Exercise and physical activity are known to help to preserve function and improve quality of life at all life stages. These issues are increasingly important given that life expectancy in most parts of the United States is higher now than ever before. Technological advances in medicine have helped to extend longevity, but our society is experiencing health problems related to lifestyle factors in epidemic proportions. The current medical environment, emphasizing costly diagnostic testing, medications, and surgery, often allows people to live longer, but not necessarily BETTER.
The thriving fitness industry is evidence that many individuals recognize the importance of exercise. However, despite our best intentions to stay active, obstacles get in our way. Pain is at least one, all too frequent, limiting factor in pursuing an active healthy lifestyle. Good intentions may be thwarted by pain or recurrent injury. This may be due to misdiagnosis of an underlying condition or due to lack of understanding of an appropriate starting point for an exercise plan given individual limitations. Often, many past treatments have failed to help with the underlying limitation and someone may become stuck in a cycle of pain and lack of activity. I strongly believe that with proper attention to these factors and by “starting where we are”, an active, fit and healthy lifestyle is possible for anyone.
